Atlantique is one of the twelve departments in the country of Benin. It is located in the southern part of Benin. The capital city of this department is Ouidah.

About Atlantique Department
Atlantique is an important region in Benin. It covers an area of about 3,233 square kilometers. In 2006, over 929,000 people lived here. This makes it a busy and lively area.
How Atlantique is Divided
The Atlantique Department is split into smaller areas. These smaller areas are called communes. Each commune has its own local government. The communes in Atlantique are:
- Abomey-Calavi
- Allada
- Kpomassè
- Ouidah
- Sô-Ava
- Toffo
- Tori-Bossito
- Zè
A Bit of History
In 1999, a part of the Atlantique Department was separated. This new area became its own department. It is now known as the Littoral Department. The Littoral Department includes the large city of Cotonou.
