Atlas is a small, unincorporated community located in Napa County, California. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government.
This community sits high up, at an elevation of about 1,719 feet (524 meters) above sea level. You can find Atlas about 8 miles (13 km) north-northwest of Mount Vaca and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south-southeast of a place called Atlas Peak.
What is Atlas?
Atlas is named after the nearby Atlas Peak. It started out as a resort community, which means it was a place where people would go to relax and enjoy their vacations.
When Was Atlas Established?
The community of Atlas was founded as a resort. It even had its own post office!
The Atlas Post Office
- The Atlas post office first opened in 1893.
- It moved to a new location in 1894.
- The post office eventually closed down in 1934.
