Ato Essandoh was born in Schenectady, New York. His parents, Ebow and Monica Essandoh, came from Ghana. He was their oldest child.
He finished high school at New Rochelle High School in 1990. After that, he went to Cornell University. He earned a degree in chemical engineering. He first tried acting because a girlfriend dared him to.
He later studied acting in New York City. His teacher was James Price at The Acting Studio - New York.
