Atsuhiko Ejiri (江尻 篤彦, Ejiri Atsuhiko, born July 12, 1967) is a Japanese football manager and former football player. He is well-known for his long career with the JEF United Chiba club, both as a player and a coach.

Playing Career Highlights

Atsuhiko Ejiri was born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, on July 12, 1967. After finishing his studies at Meiji University, he began his professional football journey in 1990. He joined a club then known as Furukawa Electric. This club later changed its name to JEF United Ichihara, which is now known as JEF United Chiba.

Ejiri quickly became an important player, often playing as an offensive midfielder. In his first season, his team did very well, finishing second in the 1990 JSL Cup. In 1992, the old Japan Soccer League was replaced by a new, professional league called the J1 League.

He continued to be a regular player for his team. From 1996, he also took on the important role of team captain. His team achieved another second-place finish in the 1998 J.League Cup. Atsuhiko Ejiri decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 1998 season.

Coaching and Managing Roles

After he stopped playing, Ejiri didn't leave the world of football. In 1999, he became a coach for JEF United Ichihara, the same club he played for. He mostly worked as a coach for the main team.

In 2005, he moved to another club, Albirex Niigata, where he continued coaching. He worked under different managers there. Then, in 2007, he became a coach for the Japan Under-23 national team. He helped coach the team that played in the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Becoming a Manager

Atsuhiko Ejiri returned to JEF United in 2009, this time as a coach under manager Alex Miller. However, the team was not performing well, and Miller left in July 2009. Ejiri then stepped up to become the manager himself.

Even though Ejiri managed 15 matches, the team only won one game. They finished last in the league that season. This meant the club was moved down to a lower division for the first time in its history. Ejiri continued as manager for the 2010 season, but the team couldn't get back into the top division. He resigned at the end of 2010.

On March 18, 2019, Atsuhiko Ejiri was asked to manage JEF United again. He took over after the previous manager, Juan Esnáider, left. He stayed in this role until the end of the 2019 season.
