Attilio Fontana's Political Journey
Early Career in Politics
Attilio Fontana has been a member of the Lega Lombarda and Lega Nord (LN) parties for a long time. His first major political role was as the Mayor of Induno Olona. He served in this position from 1995 to 1999.
Later, Fontana was elected to the Regional Council of Lombardy. This happened in the 2000 and 2005 regional elections. He even became the President of the Regional Council. He held this important job until July 2006.
Serving as Mayor of Varese
In 2006, Attilio Fontana became the Mayor of Varese. He won the election with a strong majority of votes. He was re-elected for a second term in May 2011.
Fontana served as Mayor until June 2016. He could not run for the position again because of term limits. This means there is a rule about how many times someone can be elected to that specific job.
Running for President of Lombardy
The 2018 Election
In January 2018, Attilio Fontana was chosen to run for President of Lombardy. He was the candidate for the centre-right group of parties. This group included parties like Forza Italia and Lega Nord.
His experience as a mayor was seen as a big strength for his campaign. The popularity of Matteo Salvini, a leader from his party, also helped his chances.
Election Day
During the election campaign, Fontana made a comment about migration. This caused some discussion and criticism. He later apologized, saying it was a mistake and not what he truly meant.
His main opponents in the election were Giorgio Gori and Dario Violi. The election took place on March 4, 2018. Attilio Fontana won with 50% of the votes. He officially became the President of Lombardy on March 26, 2018.
Leading Lombardy (2018-Present)
As President of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana has made several decisions. For example, in October 2018, he used his authority to stop a Muslim group from changing an old hospital chapel into a mosque.
In September 2020, there was a vote about reducing the number of politicians in the national parliament. Fontana voted against this change, even though his party's leader, Matteo Salvini, supported it.
Investigations and Outcomes
Sometimes, politicians face investigations about their work. Attilio Fontana has been part of a few such cases.
In May 2019, an investigation started about a possible abuse of power. However, in March 2020, the case was closed. The authorities found that no crime had been committed.
Another investigation began in July 2020. This one looked into some actions by Fontana, his wife, and his brother-in-law during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some people thought he might leave politics because of this. But Matteo Salvini supported him, and Fontana remained in his position.
On December 2, 2021, prosecutors asked for Fontana to be formally charged in this case. However, on May 13, 2022, he was found innocent. The judge decided there was not enough evidence to support the accusations.
In March 2021, Fontana was also investigated regarding money movements between Italy and Switzerland. This case was closed in February 2022. The investigating judge found there were not enough reasons to accuse him.
