The Auberge d'Allemagne (which means Inn of Germany in Maltese) was a special building in Valletta, Malta. It was built between 1571 and 1575. This inn was a home for knights from the Order of Saint John. These knights came from the "langue" (a group or division) of Germany.

History of the Auberge
Early Purpose and Design
The Auberge d'Allemagne was designed by a famous Maltese architect named Girolamo Cassar. He created many important buildings in Valletta. This auberge served as a residence for the German knights of the Order of Saint John. These knights were part of a religious and military group. They protected pilgrims and defended Christian lands.
Changes Over Time
The knights had to leave the auberge in 1798. This happened when the French army took over Malta. After the knights left, the building was used for different purposes. By the 1830s, it became the home of the Chief Justice. This person was the main judge in Malta.
Another part of the building was used by the Mediterranean Fleet. This was a group of naval ships. They used the auberge as a bakery and a mill. This means they baked bread and ground grain there.
Demolition and Legacy
Sadly, the Auberge d'Allemagne was torn down in 1839. It was demolished to make space for a new church. This church is now known as St Paul's Pro-Cathedral. The Auberge d'Allemagne was unique because it was the only auberge in Malta that was intentionally destroyed. Other auberges were pulled down because they were damaged. This damage often happened during World War II. It is possible that some parts of the old auberge still exist underground today.
