You can find more than 50 different specialty stores here. Some of the main stores, called "anchor stores," include Belk and Dillard's. Other popular shops you might find are Ann Taylor Loft, JoS. A. Bank, Talbots, Chico's, and Hibbett Sports.
The History of Auburn Mall
Auburn Mall first opened its doors in 1973. It was originally known as "Village Mall." Back then, it had two main anchor stores: Sears and Gayfers.
Changes and New Names
Over the years, the mall changed its name a few times. In 1998, it became "Colonial Mall Auburn-Opelika." Then, in 2004, the mall got a big makeover and became even larger.
During this renovation, new stores like JCPenney and Dillard's were added. Belk also moved to the mall. A new outdoor area with shops like Ann Taylor Loft and Chico's was created. This expansion also brought over 250 new jobs to the area! After this big change, the mall was renamed "Colonial University Village."
New Owners and Recent Changes
Later, a company called Marelda Retail Development, LLC bought Colonial University Village and other properties. In 2007, Jones Lang LaSalle took over managing the mall.
In 2014, the mall's name changed again to what it is today: Auburn Mall. Some of the older anchor stores have closed over time. Sears closed in 2012, and JCPenney closed in 2017. Stein Mart briefly took over the old Sears spot but also closed in 2020. Today, Belk and Dillard's remain the main anchor stores at Auburn Mall.
