Audentius: A Bishop and Writer

Who Was Audentius?

Audentius served as the bishop of Toledo. A bishop is a leader in the Christian church. He was responsible for guiding people in their faith. Historians have different ideas about the exact years he was bishop. Some believe it was from about 385 to 395 AD. Others suggest it was around 376 AD.

A Writer Against False Beliefs

Audentius was also known for his writing. A historian named Gennadius of Massilia wrote about him around 480 AD. Gennadius mentioned that Audentius wrote a book called De fide adversus haereticos. This means "On Faith Against Heretics."

What Was His Book About?

In his book, Audentius wrote against different groups who had ideas about faith that he believed were wrong. These groups included the Manichaeans, Sabellians, and Arians. He was especially strong in his arguments against the Photinians. Audentius wanted to show that the second person of the Trinity (which Christians believe is God the Son) has always existed, just like God the Father. Sadly, this important book has been lost over time.

How Do We Know About Him?

Even though his book is gone, we know about Audentius from other writers. For example, an abbot named Johannes Trithemius wrote about him in 1494. Trithemius described Audentius as a person with a very sharp mind for understanding religious writings. Some historians, like the Count of Cedillo, believe that all the mentions of Audentius refer to the same person.
