The Aue Stagecoach Inn is a collection of three historic buildings. They were built by a German immigrant named Max Aue. You can find them in Leon Springs, Texas, near Boerne Stage Road and I-10.
These buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. They are a great example of 19th-century Texas vernacular architecture. This means they show the common building styles and materials used by local people at that time.

The First Home: Saltbox House
Max Aue was born in Germany in 1826. He moved to Texas in 1852. In 1855, he bought some land and built his first home. It was a 1.5-story house made of limestone. It had outside steps that led to a cellar.
Inside, a staircase went up to a loft where Max lived. The two rooms downstairs were used as a store. This house was an important stop on the stagecoach route between San Antonio and Boerne. Later, in the 1970s, the house was updated and expanded to become a restaurant.
A Family Home: Dog Trot House
In February 1857, Max Aue married Emma Topperwin. For their new home, he built a one-story house. It was a "dog trot" style cabin made of cedar logs. A dog trot house has an open hallway through the middle.
As their family grew, more parts were added to the cabin. In 1968, the Historic American Buildings Survey studied this dog trot house. They noted it had two chimneys and a dirt floor. The house measured about 27 by 57 feet. The logs used to build it were about 5 to 7 inches thick.
A Place for Travelers: Greek Revival Hotel
In 1878, a new two-story building was added to the complex. This building was in the Greek Revival style. It served as a hotel for people traveling by stagecoach. The Aue family lived on the first floor of this new hotel. Guests stayed in rooms on the second floor.
The hotel had a two-story porch built in the Victorian style. This made it look very grand. In 1886, a train line connected San Antonio to the Texas coast. The train station was only about 50 yards from the Aue Hotel. This made it even easier for travelers to visit. The old dog trot cabin was later connected to the hotel on the ground floor.
