The August F. Martzahn House is a historic building in Davenport, Iowa. It is located in the city's West End. This special house has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. This means it's an important part of American history!

Meet August F. Martzahn

August F. Martzahn was born in Davenport on January 26, 1861. He went to public schools in the city. As a young man, he learned the butcher's trade.

When he was just 18 years old, August opened his own butcher shop. It was located on West Third Street. Later, he started a company called the Davenport Slaughter & Rendering Company.

This company was the only one of its kind in Davenport. It grew to be one of the biggest in Eastern Iowa. His business focused on processing animal products and dealing with hides. August Martzahn built this house in 1911.

The House's Cool Architecture

The Martzahn House is a great example of early 20th-century design. It mixes different popular styles from that time. The house combines the strong, balanced look of Georgian Revival buildings.

It also has fun details from the American Craftsman and Prairie School styles. You can see these details in its two-tone stucco exterior. Look for the cool geometric patterns in the leaded glass windows.

The house also has large, square brackets near the main entrance. The wide eaves (the parts of the roof that hang over) have projecting rafter ends. Even the short posts supporting the roof returns on the dormers are interesting. A local architect named Arthur Ebeling designed this unique home.
