August Krakau (born September 12, 1894 – died January 7, 1975) was a German general during World War II. He was a high-ranking officer in the Wehrmacht, which was the armed forces of Nazi Germany. Krakau is known for leading the 7th Mountain Division during the war. He also received a special award called the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
August Krakau's Military Career
August Krakau was a military leader who served in the German army. He was born in 1894 and lived until 1975. His most important role was during World War II, a major global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945.
Leading the 7th Mountain Division
During World War II, August Krakau became a Generalleutnant, which is a rank similar to a major general in other armies. He was put in charge of the 7th Mountain Division. This was a special military unit trained to fight in difficult mountain areas. Leading such a division meant he was responsible for many soldiers and important decisions during battles.
Awards and Recognition
August Krakau received one of the highest military awards of his time, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. This award was given to soldiers who showed extreme bravery or successful leadership in battle. He received it on June 21, 1941, when he was an Oberst (a colonel) and was commanding the Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 85, which was part of the mountain troops.
