A Naval Officer's Life

Bernard de Marigny started his journey in the French Navy on June 22, 1756. He began as a Garde-Marine, which was like a young officer in training. His younger brother, Charles de Bernard de Marigny, also served in the Navy and became a very high-ranking officer, a vice admiral.

Bernard de Marigny steadily moved up the ranks. He became a Lieutenant on November 27, 1765. Later, in 1777, he was promoted to Lieutenant-colonel.

In 1778, he took command of a warship called the Fortunée. This was a frigate, a type of fast warship, that had 32 guns. He continued to advance, becoming a Captain on March 13, 1779.

After the Fortunée was captured by the enemy, Marigny was given command of other important ships. He captained the Vaillant, a ship with 64 guns, during the Battle of Fort Royal on April 29, 1781. He also commanded the Réfléchi.

On July 17, 1781, he took charge of another 64-gun ship named the Actionnaire.

His final command was the César, a large ship with 74 guns. He led the César during the important Battle of the Saintes on April 12, 1782. During this fierce battle, he was wounded. Sadly, he passed away when the César exploded during the night after the battle.
