Aunt Jane's Nieces on Vacation is an exciting adventure novel written in 1912 by L. Frank Baum. He is famous for creating The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. For this book, he used the pen name "Edith Van Dyne." The publisher changed the book's title from Baum's original idea, Aunt Jane's Nieces in Journalism, which made him quite upset.

About the Book

This book is part of a series about Aunt Jane's nieces. It tells a story of adventure and learning. The characters discover important lessons about people and community.

The Story Begins

The story starts with John Merrick and his three nieces. They return to their vacation home in Millville, a town in upstate New York. The nieces are Patsy Doyle, Beth De Graf, and Louise Merrick Weldon. They soon get bored with just relaxing. They want to be more involved in the town's daily life.

Starting a Newspaper

Beth loves reading newspapers. So, with Uncle John's financial help, the girls decide to start their own newspaper. They use ready-made news stories from a wire service. They also add lots of local news and gossip. Louise is especially good at finding local stories. Louise's husband, Arthur Weldon, has his name at the top of the newspaper's staff list. This was common for organizations run by women back then. Because of this, Arthur gets into a big disagreement with a local person.

Facing Challenges

The main part of the story involves problems caused by greedy mill owners. These owners try to trick the townspeople. The girls must work together to uncover their plans. They face many challenges as they try to help the community.

Important Lessons

L. Frank Baum fills the town of Millville with many interesting characters. Through their experiences, the girls learn a valuable lesson. They realize that every person is unique and special. They learn not to judge people as just "the masses." Everyone has their own quirks and stories. The book also brings back a character named Quintus Fogerty. He is a private detective who first appeared in Aunt Jane's Nieces in Society. He helps the girls solve some of the tricky parts of the plot.
