Aurélien Rougerie's Rugby Journey
Aurélien Rougerie was born in Beaumont, Puy-de-Dôme, France. His family has a strong sports background. His father, Jacques Rougerie, was also a French international rugby player. His mother was an international basketball player, playing in 107 games for her country.
Playing for France
Aurélien Rougerie first played for the French national rugby team in 2001. This was against the South Africa team. He played 76 games for France and scored 23 tries. A "try" in rugby is like a touchdown in American football. His last game for France was in 2012 against Italy.
Rougerie was a key player in the French team that reached the Rugby World Cup final in 2011. He helped set up a try for his teammate Thierry Dusautoir during that important game.
He also had the honor of being captain for the French Barbarians team twice. The Barbarians are a special invitational rugby team. He led them to wins against Samoa in 2013 and against Australia in 2016. He even scored a try for the Barbarians in a game against Scotland in 2003. This makes him one of the few players to have played for France, the French Barbarians, and the Barbarians FC.
Playing for Clubs
In 2002, during a European game, Rougerie suffered a serious throat injury. This injury required him to have three surgeries on his larynx, which is part of your throat.
In 2007, Rougerie helped his club, Clermont, win the European Challenge Cup. They beat Bath in the final with a score of 22-16.
He then became captain of the Clermont Auvergne team. In 2010, he led them to win the French championship, known as the Bouclier de Brennus. This was a huge win for Clermont, as they had been close to winning it 10 times before but always lost. They finally won against Perpignan with a score of 19-6.
Rougerie won his second Bouclier de Brennus with Clermont in 2017. This was just before his last season as a professional player. Before the final game, he showed great sportsmanship. He asked his coach, Franck Azema, to let a younger player, Damian Penaud, start the game instead of him. Penaud played very well and scored Clermont's only try in that game.
The 2017-2018 season was his 33rd and final season playing for ASM Clermont Auvergne. Aurélien Rougerie is known in France and Europe for his long career and for staying loyal to just one club throughout his entire professional life. This is quite rare in professional sports.
