Aurélien Rougerie's Rugby Journey
Aurélien Rougerie was born in Beaumont, Puy-de-Dôme, France. Rugby was definitely in his family! His father, Jacques Rougerie, was also a French international rugby player. His mother, Christine Dulac, was an international basketball player, representing France 107 times.
Playing for France
Aurélien Rougerie first played for the French national rugby team in 2001. His first game was against South Africa. He played a total of 76 games for France and scored 23 tries. His last game for France was in 2012 against Italy.
He was a key part of the French team that reached the Rugby World Cup final in 2011. In that important match, he helped set up a try for his teammate Thierry Dusautoir.
Rougerie also had the honor of captaining the French Barbarians team twice. He led them to victory against Samoa in 2013 and against Australia in 2016. He even played for the Barbarians FC team in 2003, scoring a try against Scotland. It's quite rare for a player to have played for France, the French Barbarians, and the Barbarians FC!
Club Career with Clermont
Rougerie played his entire professional career, which lasted 19 years, with one club: ASM Clermont Auvergne. This shows incredible loyalty and dedication!
In 2002, during a European game, Rougerie suffered a throat injury. He needed three surgeries to his larynx to recover.
Winning Trophies with Clermont
In 2007, Rougerie helped Clermont win the European Challenge Cup. They beat Bath in the final with a score of 22-16.
He then captained the Clermont Auvergne team to win the French championship, known as the Bouclier de Brennus, in 2010. This was a huge moment for the club, as they had been close many times before. They won the final against Perpignan 19-6.
Rougerie won his second Bouclier de Brennus with Clermont in 2017. This was just before his final season as a professional player. Before the French Top 14 Final, he showed great sportsmanship. He asked his coach, Franck Azema, not to start him in the game. Instead, he suggested that a younger player, Damian Penaud, should start. Penaud played very well in the game, helping Clermont score their only try.
His 2017-2018 season was his 33rd and last season playing for ASM Clermont Auvergne. Aurélien Rougerie is seen in France and Europe as a great example of how long a player can stay in the game and how loyal they can be to one club.
