Saint Aurea of Córdoba (born 810, died 856) was a brave Christian woman who lived a long time ago in Spain. She was a nun and is remembered as a martyr. This means she died for her Christian faith. Aurea was part of a group called the Martyrs of Córdoba. These were 48 Christians who were executed during Muslim rule in a place called al-Andalus. We celebrate Saint Aurea's life on July 19th each year.
Who Was Aurea of Córdoba?
Aurea was born in Córdoba, Spain. Her family was important and noble. Her father was a Muslim from Seville, and some of her relatives were judges. Even though her family was Muslim, Aurea became a Christian.
Aurea's Family and Faith
Aurea had two brothers, John and Adulphus. They were also Christians. In 825, her brothers were executed because they chose to follow Christianity instead of Islam. This was a very difficult time for Aurea.
After her brothers died, Aurea decided to live a quiet life. She went to a convent called Cuteclara. A convent is a place where nuns live and pray. Aurea stayed there for 30 years with her mother, Artemia, who was also a nun.
Aurea's Arrest and Death
Even though Aurea lived quietly, her Christian faith became known. Some of her Muslim relatives found her at the convent. They brought her before a judge. The judge tried to make Aurea give up her Christian faith. At first, she was scared and agreed to deny her faith. She was then released.
However, Aurea soon felt very sorry for what she had done. She bravely decided to declare that she was truly a Christian. Because of this, she was arrested again. In 856, Aurea was executed for her faith. Some stories say she was beheaded. Her body was thrown into the Guadalquivir River and was never found.
Aurea is remembered as a strong and faithful woman who stood up for what she believed in.
