Aurelio Espinosa Pólit (born in Quito, Ecuador, on July 11, 1894 – died February 21, 1961) was an important Ecuadorian writer, poet, and university professor. He helped start the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. He also founded the Aurelio Espinosa Pólit Museum and Library in Quito.
He was a Jesuit priest, which is a type of religious order. He wrote more than 600 pieces and books during his life. He was also a very famous translator. He translated all the writings of ancient Latin poets like Virgil and Horace into Spanish. He also translated works by the Greek play writer Sophocles.
Aurelio Espinosa Pólit was the first leader of the Pontifical Catholic University. There, he taught Greek language and Greek literature. He knew Latin and Greek very well. He could also speak English, French, Spanish, and Italian fluently.
Today, a major writing award in Ecuador is named after him. It is called the Aurelio Espinosa Pólit Prize.
