Aurora Cáceres facts for kids
Zoila Aurora Cáceres Moreno (1877–1958) was an important Peruvian writer. She was part of a new style of writing called modernismo, which was popular in Europe. Zoila Aurora wrote novels, essays, and travel stories. She also wrote a book about her husband, the Guatemalan writer Enrique Gómez Carrillo.
Her life was closely connected to the history of Peru. This included the War of the Pacific (1879–1883) and a civil war in 1895. She also spent time living in Paris. Recently, people have started to study her essays more to understand how women writers fit into the modernismo movement.
During the War of the Pacific, Zoila Aurora's family had to flee from Chilean soldiers. Sadly, her sister was killed during this time. Her father, Andrés Avelino Cáceres, was a Colonel in the Peruvian Army. He led a guerrilla war against the soldiers who had taken over. Peru lost that war, and the Chilean army occupied Lima, the capital city.
After the Chileans left, her father became a General. He worked as a diplomat in Europe and even became president of Peru. However, he was later forced to leave the country after a difficult event in 1895. All these events deeply affected Zoila Aurora Cáceres. She studied in Germany with nuns and later at the Sorbonne university in Paris. She knew many famous modernismo writers, like Amado Nervo and Rubén Darío. She married Enrique Gómez Carrillo, another well-known writer.
Besides her interesting life, Zoila Aurora Cáceres was also very active in politics and wrote many different kinds of books.
