Early Life and Family

Aurore von Haxthausen was the daughter of Baron Carl Henrik Gyllenhaal. Her father was a high government official called a State Councillor (statsråd) and also the Governor (landshövding) of Halland County. Her mother was Aurore af Nordin. In 1873, Aurore married Frederik Ferdinand von Haxthausen, who was a Danish nobleman.

Life at Court

From 1857 to 1871, Aurore von Haxthausen served as a special lady-in-waiting to Louise of the Netherlands, who was the Queen of Sweden. A lady-in-waiting is a female assistant who helps a queen or princess with her daily life and duties. Aurore was very popular at the royal court. She was known for her cleverness and her ability to cheer people up. She was also incredibly skilled at playing the piano and making up music on the spot. For example, once when Queen Louise had scolded a maid, Aurore quickly made everyone feel better by playing a piano piece that described the whole situation.

Her Works

Aurore von Haxthausen wrote many pieces of music for the piano. Some of her compositions were played in public concerts. One of her piano pieces was even performed often during the yearly opening of the Swedish parliament for several years. She also published a collection of novels, which are long stories. This collection was called Från svenska hem (meaning "From Swedish Homes") and was released in 1883–84.
