Austin is also part of the larger Kansas City metropolitan area, meaning it's located near the big city of Kansas City.

A Look at Austin's Past

Austin was named after a local merchant named William Austin. This community once had its own post office. The Austin post office opened in 1856. It served the area for many years before closing in 1918. In 1925, only 19 people lived in Austin.

A special building in Austin, called the Stumbaugh Post No. 180 GAR Hall, is important for its history. This building was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in the year 2000. This means it's recognized as a place that is important to the history of the United States.
