The Australian Aborigines Advocate was a magazine published a long time ago in Sydney, Australia. It was first called The New South Wales Aborigines' Advocate. This magazine shared stories and news about the work being done with Aboriginal people in Australia.

A Magazine's Journey: Its History

The magazine started on July 23, 1901. It was published every month by a group called the New South Wales Aborigines' Mission. A "mission" in this sense was a group that worked to help and support Aboriginal people, often with a religious purpose. The magazine's goal was to record the work being done with Aboriginal people each month.

The magazine kept its first name until February 29, 1908. Then, the mission changed its name to the Australian Aborigines Mission. So, the magazine also changed its name to the Australian Aborigines Advocate. At that time, it cost one shilling per year to subscribe. A shilling was a type of money used in Australia a long time ago.

The magazine continued to be published until February 1, 1929. The mission changed its name again, this time to the United Aborigines Mission. The magazine then became The United Aborigines Messenger. This version of the magazine was published until April or May of 1987. From 1987 until 2003, the magazine was known by a shorter name, Messenger.

Making Old Magazines Digital

This magazine has been made available online by the National Library of Australia. This process is called "digitisation." It means that the old paper copies of the magazine were scanned and turned into digital files. Now, anyone can read them online through a website called Trove.
