Scientific classification

The Austroglanis barnardi is a special kind of catfish that lives in freshwater. It's also known as the spotted rock-catfish or Barnard's rock-catfish. This fish is part of a small family called Austroglanididae, which only has three members. Sadly, it is an endangered species, meaning it's at high risk of disappearing forever.

What is Austroglanis barnardi Like?

This fish is quite small, usually growing to about 8 centimeters (about 3 inches) long. It has a flat head with a wide snout. Its eyes are on top of its head, which helps it see things above it. The mouth is on the underside of its head and has soft, fleshy lips.

Special Features

  • It has three pairs of barbels, which are like whiskers that help it feel and taste things in the water.
  • Its fins are short and round.
  • It has weak, curved spines on its pectoral (side) and dorsal (back) fins.
  • Its body color is golden-brown with dark brown blotches, which helps it blend in with its rocky home.

Where Does Austroglanis barnardi Live?

This unique catfish is found only in South Africa. It lives in freshwater rivers in a warm, subtropical climate. So far, it has only been seen in the Thee, Noordhoeks, and Hex Rivers. These are all small rivers that flow into the larger Clanwilliam Olifants River System in the Western Cape region of South Africa.

Its Favorite Home

A. barnardi loves to live in fast-flowing parts of rivers called "riffles." These are areas where the water is shallow and flows quickly over loose rocks and coarse sand. It prefers water that is about 10 to 60 centimeters (4 to 24 inches) deep. Other fish species, like Pseudobarbus phlegethon and Barbus calidus, also share these river habitats.

What Does Austroglanis barnardi Eat?

Scientists are still learning a lot about this fish because it was discovered not too long ago. We do know that it enjoys a diet of:

  • Aquatic insects (insects that live in water)
  • Benthic invertebrates (small creatures without backbones that live at the bottom of the river)
  • Other small fish

How Long Does it Live?

The A. barnardi has a generation time of about 12 years. This means it takes about 12 years for a new generation of fish to grow up and have their own babies. Not much else is known about how they reproduce.

What Dangers Does Austroglanis barnardi Face?

This catfish is endangered because its home is being destroyed in several ways.

  • Stream channelization: Rivers are sometimes straightened or changed, which ruins the natural riffle habitats the fish needs.
  • Water abstraction: Too much water is taken from the rivers for farming or other uses, leaving less water for the fish.
  • Sedimentation: Dirt and mud wash into the rivers, covering the rocks and sand where the fish lives and feeds.

Other Threats

  • Pollution: Some parts of the rivers flow next to farms and orchards. This means that pesticides and insecticides used on crops might wash into the water and harm the fish.
  • Invasive species: New fish species that are not native to the area have been introduced. These include tilapia, smallmouth bass, and bluegill sunfish. These new fish can compete with A. barnardi for food and space, or even eat them.

How Are We Protecting Austroglanis barnardi?

Biologists and conservationists are working hard to protect this endangered catfish.

  • Fish barriers: In 2013, a special barrier was built in the Noordhoeks River. This barrier helps stop invasive fish like the Micropterus species (which includes smallmouth bass) from moving upstream into areas where A. barnardi lives.
  • Removing invasive fish: Between 2010 and 2014, people actively removed invasive spotted bass from parts of the Thee River. This helps reduce the competition and threats to the native fish.

Unfortunately, currently, no known populations of A. barnardi live inside protected nature reserves. This makes their conservation even more challenging and important.
