Her Art Career

How She Creates Art

Autumn Knight is famous for her performance art. Her background in therapy helps her create these pieces. She often uses the people watching her shows to explore how we interact. Her art looks at things like race, gender, and power in a fun and sometimes silly way. People have described her work as having a "funny and unexpected" feeling.

In 2018, Autumn performed a piece called Sanity TV. She acted as a funny talk show host. She asked people in the audience to join in with questions and interviews.

Autumn also worked with the famous singer Solange on her music video for the album When I Get Home in 2019. Autumn has won some big awards too! She received the Nancy B. Negley Rome Prize in 2021–22. She also won a Guggenheim Fellowship in Film-Video in 2022. These awards are a big deal in the art world.

Shows and Performances

Autumn Knight's art has been shown in many places. Some of these include:

In 2019, Autumn performed in Los Angeles. She was also chosen to be part of the 2019 Whitney Biennial. This is a very important art show that happens every two years. She also performed with artist Robert Pruitt as "MF Problem" at the CounterCurrent Festival.

In 2020, Autumn was part of an exhibit at Artpace called Visibilities: Intrepid Women of Artpace. This show celebrated Artpace's 25th anniversary. It featured artists who had been part of their special residency program, like Autumn. Her video from 2017, called Meesh, was shown in this exhibit.

In July 2020, Autumn created a two-hour performance for The Kitchen. She worked with artist Adebukola Bodunrin. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the show was streamed live online using Twitch. The performance explored how different parts of our identity, like race and gender, affect artists and art spaces. During the show, cameras followed Autumn. Sometimes, security camera footage from inside The Kitchen would interrupt the live stream. Autumn slowly started to take apart parts of The Kitchen while giving speeches to the audience. One reviewer said that Autumn's actions showed The Kitchen as a complicated place. It was like a "cage" where power struggles happened, but also a place for her to explore big ideas.
