What Happens in the Story
The story takes place during World War II. A young girl named Elizabeth must move to Pennsylvania to stay with her grandparents. Her father is away serving as a soldier in the Pacific region.
Meeting New Friends
Elizabeth soon meets a boy named Charles, whose grandmother works as the family cook. Even though Charles is treated unfairly by other people because of the color of his skin, he and Elizabeth become close friends. Elizabeth also meets twin brothers who live next door and discovers many hidden family truths.
Overcoming Sad Moments
The characters face serious problems, including illness and loss. Elizabeth gets sick with a bad fever during the cold winter. Sadly, Charles is chased into the dangerous woods by bullies and loses his life in a tragic accident. Elizabeth feels deep sorrow after losing her friend. Later, her injured father returns home from the war, and she must learn how to heal.
The Author's Real Life
Lois Lowry shared that Autumn Street is partly based on her own childhood memories. Like Elizabeth, Lowry grew up in Pennsylvania during the war. She also lost a real childhood friend, which inspired the sad events in the book.
