Her mother lived in England. This made Autumn very interested in English culture. She even calls herself an "Anglophile," meaning she loves English things. This interest later inspired her to direct her first movie, Emma. The film is based on a classic novel by Jane Austen.
Autumn studied theater at Los Angeles City College. She learned photography informally from her father.
Photography and Directing Career
Starting Her Creative Journey
Autumn de Wilde first wanted to work in theater. In 1995, she was performing at a festival called Lollapalooza. She got heatstroke and met the singer Beck, who let her rest on his tour bus. She took some pictures of him, using what her father had taught her. Beck liked her photos and encouraged her to become a photographer.
Becoming a Famous Photographer
Since then, Autumn has become a well-known photographer for celebrities. She has taken photos for many album covers. Some of the artists she has worked with include Miranda Cosgrove, Elliott Smith, She & Him, The White Stripes, and Fiona Apple. Her pictures have also appeared in popular magazines like Spin and Rolling Stone.
Autumn became good friends with musician Elliott Smith. He really liked her work. He even told his team that he would only make music videos if Autumn directed them. In 2007, a book called Elliott Smith was released. It featured Autumn's photos of the musician, along with his handwritten lyrics and interviews.
Directing Music Videos and Films
Autumn has directed many music videos for artists. These include videos for Beck, The Decemberists, Florence and the Machine, and Death Cab for Cutie. She has also filmed live concerts for bands like The Flaming Lips.
In 2010, she provided commentary for documentaries about the band Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Her work was also featured in a special edition of The Decemberists' album The King Is Dead in 2011. This edition included her unique Polaroid photos and illustrations.
Autumn de Wilde made her first full-length movie, Emma., in 2020. It is based on the famous novel by Jane Austen. The movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy. Before this, she directed a short segment for an HBO documentary called Six by Sondheim.
In 2022, Autumn photographed Florence Welch for Vogue UK. This was before the release of Florence and the Machine's album Dance Fever.
Personal Life
Autumn de Wilde was married to drummer Aaron Sperske. Their daughter, Arrow de Wilde, is the lead singer for the band Starcrawler.
