Aves Argentinas, which means Argentine Birds in English, is a group of people in Argentina who work to protect wild birds and the places they live. It is a non-profit environmental organization, which means its main goal is to help nature, not to make money.

Founded way back in 1916, Aves Argentinas is the oldest environmental group in all of South America. The group helps people learn about birds and why they are important to our world.

A Mission to Protect Birds

The main job of Aves Argentinas is bird conservation. This means they work to keep bird species safe from harm and make sure their natural homes, like forests and wetlands, are protected. They study birds, run educational programs, and work on special projects to help birds that are in trouble.

Saving the Red-and-Green Macaw

One of the group's most exciting projects is bringing back the red-and-green macaw (Ara chloropterus) to Argentina. For many years, this beautiful, colorful parrot could not be found in the wild in Argentina.

Because it had disappeared from the country, the macaw is listed as critically endangered in Argentina. This is a serious warning that means it is in danger of becoming extinct there. However, the bird is doing better in other parts of the world, where it is listed as a species of "least concern" by the IUCN Red List.

To fix this problem in Argentina, Aves Argentinas started a re-introduction program. This means they are carefully releasing macaws back into the wild. The first group of birds was set free in 2015 in the Iberá Provincial Reserve, a large protected park in the province of Corrientes. This project gives hope that the red-and-green macaw will once again fly free in Argentina's skies.
