Aviva Chiara Mongillo (born February 6, 1998), also known as Carys, is a talented Canadian pop singer and actress. She is well-known for her roles as Alya Kendrick in the TV show Backstage on Family Channel. She also played Juniper in the sitcom Workin' Moms on CBC. After her song "Princesses Don't Cry" became very popular online, she released an EP called To Anyone Like Me in October 2020. This was released through Warner Music Canada.
Early Life
Aviva Chiara Mongillo was born on February 6, 1998, in Markham, Canada. Her family is Italian, and she has said they always supported her dreams. When she was seven, she started taking acting classes. Later, she also took vocal lessons and guitar classes. She went to Unionville High School. She continued her studies even while working on the TV show Backstage. Aviva has shared that she has sometimes felt worried or anxious since she was young.
Career
While she was still in high school, Aviva Mongillo put some of her original songs on SoundCloud. A music producer in Toronto noticed her songs. He invited her to a recording studio. She worked with songwriters there. After about a month, they told her that the music was for a new TV show called Backstage. They suggested she audition for a part. She got the role of Alya Kendrick and appeared in sixty episodes of the show.
In June 2016, Aviva released her first song, "Hype." A music video also came out with the song. On September 15, 2017, she released her first EP, which is like a mini-album, called Songs About Boys. The Family Channel, which aired Backstage, helped promote her EP. In 2017, she also acted in a Canadian comedy film called Don't Talk to Irene.
In 2018, Aviva started playing the role of Juniper in the CBC sitcom Workin' Moms. In 2019, she appeared in the movie Long Shot. She played a younger version of the character played by Charlize Theron. She also appeared in the horror film Random Acts of Violence that same year.
Later in 2019, Aviva started using the stage name Carys for her music. Her first single as Carys, "Bad Boy," came out on July 26, 2019. In August 2019, "Princesses Don't Cry," a song from her Songs About Boys EP, became a huge hit. It went viral on the social media app TikTok. More than 850,000 videos were made using the song. Because of its popularity, the song was re-released as a single under her new name, Carys. Aviva said she was surprised when the song became popular. She wanted Carys to be a separate character, so she didn't have to show her own feelings. But then she realized it was a good chance to be open with her music. The music video for "Princesses Don't Cry" was released on November 12, 2019.
In June 2020, "No More" was released as her next single, also with a music video. On August 28, 2020, she released the single "Crush." She also announced that her first EP as Carys, To Anyone Like Me, would be released on October 2, 2020. When To Anyone Like Me came out, the song "When a Girl" was released as a single, along with its own music video.
