Early Fights and First Loss
Avni Yıldırım won his first 16 professional fights. This was a perfect start to his career. On October 7, 2017, he faced Chris Eubank Jr. in Germany. This fight was part of a big tournament called the World Boxing Super Series. Eubank Jr. was a highly ranked boxer. Avni was knocked down in the first round. During the fight, Dirrell got a cut from an accidental head clash. The fight was stopped in the tenth round. Dirrell was declared the winner by a split technical decision. This means the judges scored the fight based on the rounds completed. Avni was not happy with the stoppage. He wanted to continue fighting to win the title. His team tried to get an immediate rematch. The WBC decided that the winner of Dirrell versus David Benavidez would have to fight Avni next. However, injuries and the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays.
