History of Avoca

How Avoca Got Its Name

The community of Avoca had a post office that was open for a few years, from 1906 to 1909. The name "Avoca" comes from a place mentioned in a famous collection of poems and songs called Irish Melodies. These melodies were written by a well-known Irish poet named Thomas Moore. He wrote about beautiful places in Ireland, and one of them was the Avoca River valley, which inspired the name for this community in West Virginia.
