The Avoca River: A Journey Through Victoria

Where Does the Avoca River Start and End?

The Avoca River begins its journey in the hills near a place called Amphitheatre. From there, it travels for about 270 kilometres (about 168 miles). Its long path eventually leads it to Lake Bael Bael, where it finishes its flow.

Towns Along the River

As the Avoca River winds its way through the land, it passes by several towns. These include Avoca, Bealiba, Charlton, and Culgoa. The river is often a central feature for these communities.

How Deep is the Avoca River?

The Avoca River is not usually very deep. Most of the river is less than 2 metres (about 6.5 feet) deep. However, there are some deeper spots, especially near the town of Logan. The river also gets water from 13 different creeks that flow into it.

When the River Changes: Floods and Dry Spells

The amount of water in the Avoca River can change a lot. In the summer, it might even stop flowing completely for several months. At other times, especially after heavy rains, the river can flood. For example, in January 2010, the river flooded and covered about 80% of the town of Charlton. Roads were cut off, and food had to be brought in by helicopter. The town of Culgoa was also affected by this flood.
