Avon is a small, former community in Polk County, Iowa, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community, which means it does not have its own local government.
History of Avon
Early Days
The area where Avon is located was first planned out by Charles Keeney around 1855 or 1856. At that time, Avon was the only village in Allen Township. It grew quite a bit in its early years.
Avon had a large hotel, a church, and several stores. More than 20 houses were built there. The first schoolhouse in the area opened in 1856. Avon even had its own post office, which started in 1857.
Changes Over Time
A place called Avon Lake was founded about a mile away. This happened when the railroad was built, but it bypassed Avon itself. This often meant that towns not on the railroad would grow slower.
Avon's population numbers changed over the years. In 1900, only 6 people lived there. By 1925, the population had grown to 11, and then to 18 in the same year. The Avon post office closed in 1927. By 1940, Avon's population was 22 people.
Avon's cemetery used to be called Watts Cemetery.
Recent Events
On March 5, 2022, a very strong tornado hit the town. Even though the tornado was a bit weaker when it reached Avon, it still caused damage. Several homes and buildings were affected by the storm.
