Awinmul facts for kids
The Awinmul were a group of Indigenous people who lived in the Northern Territory of Australia. They were one of many different Aboriginal groups across the continent, each with their own unique culture and traditions.
Where the Awinmul Lived
The Awinmul people's traditional homeland was a large area in the Northern Territory. It covered about 1,800 square miles (4,700 km2) of land. This region stretched from a place called Brocks Creek all the way to the Edith River. It also included the areas near the start of the Mary and Fergusson rivers. This land was very important to the Awinmul people, providing them with everything they needed to live.
Awinmul History
In the early 1900s, the Awinmul people faced a very difficult time. A long and severe drought hit their region. This meant there was not enough rain, which made it hard to find food and water. Because of this tough period, the number of Awinmul people became much smaller. The remaining survivors eventually joined another Indigenous group called the Wulwulam people. This helped them to continue their way of life and traditions.
