History of AzTU
Early Beginnings
On November 14, 1920, a technical school called "Baku Polytechnicum" was closed. A new school, the Baku Polytechnic Institute, took its place. This new institute trained engineers. They learned about farming, building, electricity, money, and oil.
In 1923, the school changed its name. It became the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute. A few years later, in March 1929, the school was split. It became three separate schools. These schools focused on farming, economics, and oil.
Growing and Changing
Over time, more engineers were needed in other areas, not just oil. So, the school's courses grew. In 1934, it changed its name again. It was now called the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute (AZPI). This was because it also included civil engineering, which is about designing and building things like roads and bridges.
During World War II, many schools faced challenges. But AZPI worked hard to stay open.
Becoming a University
In 1950, a new school was created. It was called the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute (AzPI). This new school took over all the non-oil related courses. This allowed the original institute to focus only on the oil industry. The AzPI later became the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy.
In 1970, a branch of AzPI was opened in Ganja. This helped more students get an education.
Finally, in 1993, AzPI changed its status. It became what it is today: the Azerbaijan Technical University.
