B-ration facts for kids
A B ration is a special type of meal used by the United States military. It's a meal made from ingredients that are canned or preserved, meaning they can last a long time without needing a fridge. These meals are often cooked in special outdoor kitchens called field kitchens. They can be served to soldiers in the field or at military bases that don't have big refrigerators or freezers.

What Makes B Rations Different?
B rations are unique because they don't use fresh, frozen, or chilled foods. This is how they are different from 'A' rations, which are made with fresh ingredients.
B Rations vs. Field Rations
B rations are also different from other types of military food called field rations. Field rations, like the Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE), are usually given to individual soldiers to eat right away. They don't need to be cooked in a kitchen. B rations, on the other hand, are typically prepared for a group of soldiers in a field kitchen.
How B Rations Have Changed
In the past, trained cooks would prepare B rations in these field kitchens. Today, the term "B ration" often means pre-packaged meals for groups. These modern B rations need very little extra cooking. They are similar to older group meals like the 5-in-1 ration or 10-in-1 food parcel.
Modern B Rations: The UGR-B
One example of a modern B ration is the Unitized Group Ration B, or UGR-B. This is a special meal kit designed to feed a group of soldiers for one meal.
Types of UGR-B Meals
The UGR-B comes in different forms:
- Tray-based heat and serve (T-rat): These meals come in trays and can be heated using hot water. This is useful when a full field kitchen isn't available.
- Express form: This version has a special self-heating part. It also comes with disposable plates and utensils, making it easy to eat anywhere.
