The Bactris cubensis is a special type of palm tree. It is found only in certain parts of eastern Cuba. This means it is native to just that area. You can find it in the Nipe-Baracoa Massif and the eastern Sierra Maestra mountains. These palms grow at different heights, from about 40 to 700 metres above sea level.
These palm trees can grow quite tall. They usually reach between 2.7 and 6.4 metres in height. They don't grow alone; instead, they grow in groups. Each group, or "clump," can have about 6 to 12 stems.
What Are Its Relatives?
Scientists like Salzman and Judd have studied the Bactris cubensis. They found that it is closely related to two other palm species. These are the B. plumeriana and the B. jamaicana. All three of these palms are found in the Greater Antilles, which are a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. Being in a "clade" means they share a common ancestor and are part of the same family group.
