A Look Back: Badia del Vallès History
Badia del Vallès started in the 1960s. The government planned to build a new living area. This area was meant for people on the edge of two towns: Barberà del Vallès and Cerdanyola del Vallès. The plan included over 11,000 homes and all the services people would need.
Construction began in 1970. The first part included 4,156 homes and 98 shops. Before the second part could start, a new motorway was built. This road took up much of the land meant for more homes. So, only 1,216 new homes and 38 shops were built in the second phase.
All the building work finished in 1973. However, the town was not officially opened until 1975. Prince Juan Carlos, who later became King of Spain, was there for the opening. On April 14, 1994, Badia del Vallès became its own separate municipality. It was no longer part of Barberà del Vallès and Cerdanyola del Vallès.
Who Lives Here: Population Facts
Badia del Vallès is a small town in terms of land size. It covers about 0.92 square kilometers. In 2014, about 13,553 people lived here. The town is made up of one main area where everyone lives.
What the Symbols Mean
Badia del Vallès is a fairly new town. It became its own municipality in 1994. Many people who moved here in the 1970s came from other parts of Spain. Because of this, the swallow bird was chosen as a symbol. Swallows are known for migrating, or moving from one place to another.
The town's symbols also show its past. The colors on its shield and flag represent the two towns it used to be part of. Gold stands for Barberà del Vallès, and green stands for Cerdanyola del Vallès.
The Town Flag
The flag of Badia del Vallès looks just like its shield. It is a rectangle that is two parts tall and three parts long. It has two vertical stripes, one yellow and one green. In the middle of the flag, there is a black swallow with a white chest. This swallow is about 5/7 of the flag's height.
