Badis ibn Habus was a powerful Berber king. He ruled the Taifa of Granada from 1038 to 1073. A "Taifa" was a small independent Muslim kingdom in what is now Spain. Badis was part of the Zirid dynasty.
Becoming King of Granada
Badis ibn Habus became king after his father, Habbus al-Muzaffar, passed away. Some people at the court in Granada wanted his cousin, Yaddair ben Hubasa, to be the next king. But this plan did not work.
Badis had a very important advisor called a "vizier." His vizier was a Jewish man named Samuel ibn Naghrillah. Samuel made sure that Badis became king. This also helped Samuel keep his important position in the kingdom.
Expanding the Kingdom
King Badis was a strong leader. In 1038, he fought against Zuhayr, the king of the Taifa of Almería. Badis won and took control of Almería's land.
The next year, he stopped the king of the Taifa of Seville, Abu al-Qasim Muhammad ibn Abbad, from expanding his territory. Badis defeated Abu al-Qasim in a battle near Écija. He had help from the kings of Taifa of Málaga and Badajoz.
Conquering Málaga and Succession
In 1057, Badis ibn Habus conquered the Taifa of Málaga. He added Málaga to his kingdom. He then made his oldest son, Buluggin ibn Badis, the governor of Málaga.
However, Buluggin ibn Badis did not become king after his father. He died in 1064. After Buluggin's death, Badis's second son, Maksan ibn Badis, was expected to be the next king.
Later, the vizier Samuel ibn Naghrillah passed away. A new vizier, Al-Naya, took his place. After Al-Naya was killed, another advisor, Abu-l-Rabbi, became very influential. Abu-l-Rabbi convinced King Badis to choose his grandson, Abdallah ibn Buluggin, as the next king. This happened instead of Maksan, who had lost the city of Jaén and was living in the Taifa of Toledo.
Abdallah ibn Buluggin became king when Badis ibn Habus died in 1073.
