How Athletes Qualified
To play badminton at the Paris 2024 Olympics, athletes had to qualify. There were 172 spots available in total. These spots were split evenly between men and women.
Countries could send up to eight badminton players. These players would compete in different events. The host country, France, automatically got one spot for a man and one for a woman. A few other spots were given to countries that needed a special chance to compete.
Most players had to earn their spot. They did this through a special ranking list. This list was called the "Race to Paris." The Badminton World Federation kept track of these rankings. The qualification period lasted from May 1, 2023, to April 28, 2024.
- In singles events, a country could send two players. But only if both were ranked in the top sixteen. Otherwise, they could send just one player.
- For doubles, a country could send two pairs. This was allowed if both pairs were in the top eight. If not, they sent one pair.
- Also, every major part of the world had to be represented. This meant players from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
