Badnation, South Dakota facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Badnation is a small, quiet place in Mellette County, which is in the state of South Dakota in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially part of a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county government.

A Look Back: The History of Badnation

The area we now call Badnation has an interesting past. It wasn't always known by its current name. When people first settled there, it was called Runningville.

In 1916, a post office was opened in Runningville. Post offices were very important back then. They helped people send and receive letters and packages. They also connected communities to the rest of the country.

Over time, things changed. In 1938, the name of the community was officially changed from Runningville to Badnation. Just a few years later, in 1942, the post office closed down. This often happens in very small communities as populations change.

Why the Name "Badnation"?

The name "Badnation" might sound a bit unusual. The community got its current name from a nearby area called Bad Nation Township. Townships are smaller divisions of a county. They often have historical or geographical names.
