Baggy Pants and the Nitwits is an American cartoon show that first aired in 1977. It was made by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises and shown on the NBC television network.
About the Show
This cartoon series was unique because it featured two different sets of characters in each episode. Even though the characters appeared together in the show's opening, they had their own separate adventures. Each 30-minute episode of Baggy Pants and the Nitwits included two parts: one story about Baggy Pants and another about the Nitwits.
Baggy Pants
Baggy Pants is a funny cat character. He acts a lot like Charlie Chaplin's famous "Little Tramp" character. Baggy Pants even has a small mustache and uses a walking cane, just like Chaplin. His adventures are like a silent movie. Baggy Pants and the other characters in his stories do not speak. They tell their stories using actions and pantomime, similar to the Pink Panther cartoons.
The Nitwits
The Nitwits segment is about an older superhero named Tyrone. He is voiced by Arte Johnson. Tyrone had retired from fighting crime, but people wanted him back. So, he returned to help solve mysteries and stop bad guys. He gets help from his wife, Gladys, who is voiced by Ruth Buzzi. Tyrone also has a special walking cane he calls "Elmo." This cane can do amazing things, like helping Tyrone and Gladys fly!
Arte Johnson and Ruth Buzzi played similar characters before on a TV show called Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. For the cartoon, some of the grown-up jokes were removed to make sure the show was family-friendly. Arte Johnson was even given credit in the opening titles for creating The Nitwits part of the show.
The series had 13 episodes in total. As of 2019, you cannot buy the show on home video.
