Bahia Adair facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bahia Adair, also known as Adair Bay, is a special bay located in Mexico. It's at the very northern end of the Gulf of California. This area is part of the state of Sonora. It's a large bay, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) wide and 15 kilometers (9 miles) long.

Bahia Adair is famous for its important natural areas. It has huge wetlands, which are like marshy areas where water meets land. These wetlands cover about 42,430 hectares (104,847 acres). Because they are so important for nature, these wetlands were named a special conservation zone in 2009 under an agreement called the Ramsar Convention.

What Makes Bahia Adair Unique?

This bay has three main types of natural areas:

  • Wetlands: These are marshy lands that are home to many plants and animals.
  • Artesian wells: These are natural springs where water flows up from underground.
  • Salt pans: These are flat areas where salt collects as water evaporates.

Many animals that are in danger of disappearing live here. One very special fish, called the desert pupfish, lives only in this area. It's an endemic species, meaning it's found nowhere else in the world!

The entire Bahia Adair area is also part of the Alto Golfo de California Biosphere Reserve. This reserve is a special place recognized by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). It's part of their Man and the Biosphere Programme, which helps protect important natural places around the world.

Who Named Bahia Adair?

The bay was named by a British explorer named Robert William Hale Hardy. He explored this area between 1825 and 1828. He wrote about his travels in a book published in London in 1829. Hardy thought that Bahia Adair was the entrance to the Colorado River.
