Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bahya ben Joseph ibn Paquda (around 1050–1120) was an important Jewish philosopher and rabbi. He lived in Zaragoza, which is now part of Spain. He is known as one of two people called Rabbeinu Behaye. The other was a Bible expert named Bahya ben Asher.

About Bahya ibn Paquda

His Life and Main Book

Not much is known about Bahya's life. We know he worked as a judge (called a dayan) in a Jewish court. Bahya knew a lot about Jewish writings, like the Talmud. He also studied philosophy and science from Arabic, Greek, and Roman books. He often quoted non-Jewish thinkers in his own work.

Around 1080, Bahya wrote his most famous book in Arabic. Its title was Al Hidayah ila Faraid al-Qulub, which means Guide to the Duties of the Heart. Later, between 1161 and 1180, Judah ibn Tibbon translated it into Hebrew. The Hebrew title is Chovot HaLevavot, or The Duties of the Heart. This book was the first Jewish book to create a full system of ethics.

Why He Wrote Duties of the Heart

Bahya felt there was a big need in Jewish literature. He believed that earlier rabbis had not fully brought together all the ethical teachings of Judaism into one clear system.

He noticed that many Jewish people focused only on the outward actions of Jewish law. These are called "duties to be performed by the parts of the body" (Hovot HaEvarim). But Bahya felt they often ignored the inner thoughts and feelings. These inner duties are what he called "the duties of the heart" (Hovot HaLev). He also thought some people ignored both outward and inner duties.

Bahya believed that most people acted for selfish reasons. So, he wanted to show that the Jewish faith is a great spiritual truth. He felt it was based on reason, God's teachings (especially the Torah), and Jewish traditions. He stressed how important it is for a heart that loves God to be willing and joyful in doing life's duties.

He wrote that it's important for Jewish people to show clear proof for the truths of the Torah and their faith. This way, other nations would see them as wise.

Many Jewish writers who knew his work thought he was a very original thinker. His book, Chovot HaLevavot, became very popular among Jews everywhere. Parts of it were even recited for prayer before Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

His ideas inspired many later Jewish writers. One example is Berachyah, who wrote a philosophical book called Sefer Hahibbur.

His Approach to Faith

Bahya was interested in deep spiritual thinking and living a simple life. He removed anything from his ideas that he felt might make God's oneness unclear. He also made sure his system agreed with Jewish law. He wanted to present a religious system that was noble, pure, and fully in line with reason.
