Bahía Bustamante is a small village and municipality in southern Argentina. It is located in the Chubut Province. The village started in 1953. It is about 180 kilometers (112 miles) north of Comodoro Rivadavia. It is also 250 kilometers (155 miles) south of Trelew.
This unique town in Argentina focuses on collecting seaweed and mussels. It is home to an amazing nature reserve. Here you can find about 4,000 sea lions. There are also huge groups of over 50,000 penguins. More than 22 different bird species live here too. The area also boasts beautiful white sand beaches and a petrified forest. Who Lives in Bahía Bustamante?
In March 2011, Bahía Bustamante had 40 people living there. This was a big increase from 11 people in 2001. In 2001, there were 10 males for every one female.
How Bahía Bustamante Started
Don Lorenzo Soriano was born in Spain in 1901. He visited this area in 1953. He was looking for seaweed. He needed seaweed to get a substance called colloid. This colloid was used to make his hairspray, Malvik. He had started making hairspray in 1947.
After searching the Patagonian coast, he found Bahía Bustamante. Locals called it Bahía Podrida, which means "Rotten Bay". This was because of all the seaweed that piled up there. Don Lorenzo first checked out the area. Then, with his children, he began collecting seaweed. This is how this special "seaweed town" began.
At first, there were only two buildings by the sea. They set up their operations there. Soon, they started building what is now Bahía Bustamante. They built homes and rooms for over 400 workers. They also built a school, a church, and a police station. Warehouses, workshops, and a supply store were also added.
This small town grew in a remote part of Patagonia. It survived by using its natural resources. In 2004, the town added tourism to its activities. It opened its doors to people who wanted to enjoy its incredible nature. In 2009, the Patagonia Austral Interjurisdictional Coastal Marine Park was created. Bahía Bustamante is part of this important park.
