Bairdston is a small, quiet place in Sullivan County, Missouri, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or city council. Instead, it's part of the larger county area.
Where is Bairdston?
Bairdston is located in northern Missouri. You can find it where two state roads, Route BB and Route OO, meet. It's about six miles (or about 10 kilometers) northwest of a larger town called Milan.
How Bairdston Started
Bairdston has an interesting history! It was first planned out in 1859 by a person named Miles B. Baird. When a community is "platted," it means someone draws up a map showing where the streets, lots, and public areas will be. Miles B. Baird named the community after himself, which is why it's called Bairdston.
Before the community was even officially platted, a post office was opened there in 1858. A post office was a very important place back then, as it was how people sent and received letters and packages. This post office, which was called "Bairdstown," stayed open for many years until 1903.
