The Baiyungu are an Aboriginal Australian people. They come from the Gascoyne region in Western Australia.

Traditional Lands

The Baiyungu people lived on a large area of land. Historians say their traditional country was about 10,000 square kilometers (4,000 square miles). This land was near the Lower Lyndon and Minilya River. It stretched southwest from salt marshes down to Quobba.

Their eastern border was at Winning Pool. To the north, their land reached areas like Giralia and Bullara. However, it did not include the coast near North West Cape on the Exmouth Gulf.

Other Names for the Baiyungu

The Baiyungu people have been known by several names over time. Some of these names include:

  • Baijungo
  • Baiong, Baiung, Biong
  • Paiunggu, Bayungu
  • Payungu

One interesting name is Kakarakala. This means "eastern fires." It was a general name used for several Aboriginal groups. These groups lived from Shark Bay up to the North West Cape. The Mandi people often used this name. Besides the Baiyungu, it also referred to the Inggarda, Maia, and Yinikutira peoples.

A Word from Their Language

The Baiyungu language is an important part of their culture. One word from their language is:

  • tauara (pronounced: TOW-ah-rah)

This word means a special "totem center." A totem center is a significant place. It is connected to a group's spiritual beliefs and their totems. Totems are often animals or plants that represent a family or clan.
