History of Bajo Hondo Station
The Bajo Hondo train station was built in 1891 by a British company. This company was first known as the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway. Soon after, it became known as the Ferrocarril del Sud.
Bajo Hondo was one of over 500 busy stations owned by this company. These stations were active until the railway system was taken over by the government. This happened during the time General Juan Domingo Perón was president. After that, the company was renamed the General Roca Railroad, which it is still called today.
The opening day of the Bajo Hondo station in 1891 is also celebrated as the birth date of the Bajo Hondo town itself!
In the 1990s, the government-owned railway company, Ferrocarriles Argentinos, became private. After this change, the Bajo Hondo train station stopped offering rides for passengers.
Today, the station is no longer active for trains carrying people. The station building has become quite old and worn. It is now used as a private home.
