Baker, St facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Baker was once a small community, or settlement, located in St. Clair County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. Today, you won't find Baker on a map because its original location was completely covered by water when the Truman Reservoir was created.

The Story of Baker, Missouri

Baker was a small place that existed for a while in Missouri. It was named after a man named Ike Baker, who was an early postmaster there. A post office is where people send and receive mail.

A Busy Post Office

The post office in Baker was very important for the community. It first opened its doors in 1869. For about 50 years, it helped people connect and send messages. However, the post office eventually closed down in 1919.

Why Baker Disappeared

The main reason Baker no longer exists is because of the Truman Reservoir. A reservoir is a large artificial lake, usually built to store water for drinking, power, or flood control. When the Truman Reservoir was built, the land where Baker once stood became flooded. This meant the entire community site was covered by water and destroyed.
