The Baker-Devotie-Hollingsworth Block is an old and important building. It is located in the East Village area of Des Moines, Iowa, USA. This building is a special part of the city's history.

The eastern part of the building was first added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This list keeps track of important historical places. Later, in 2008, the western part of the building was also added. In 2019, the whole building became part of the East Des Moines Commercial Historic District. This district includes many historic buildings in the area.

A Look Back: The Building's Story

The eastern part of this building was constructed by Duane DeVotie and George R. Baker. Mr. Baker had a grocery store in the building. Mr. DeVotie owned the land. He built the third part of the building in 1883. This was at the same time the Hollingsworth Brothers Block was built next door.

Over the years, many different businesses used the building. In the late 1800s, it had drug stores and grocery stores. Later, it housed funeral homes and furniture shops. From 1912 to 1967, a company called Spring Hub Bicycle Manufacturing Company was there. This was the only company in Des Moines that made bicycles!

The upper floors of the building had offices and apartments. In 1922, the outside of the building was covered with cement. This made it look like stone. During this change, the original window decorations were removed. In 1976, work began to make the building look like it did originally. Today, the building has offices and homes inside.
