Bakers Delight is a well-known bakery chain that started in Australia. It sells fresh bread, pastries, and other yummy baked goods. You can find Bakers Delight stores not just in Australia, but also in New Zealand, Canada, and the United States. There are more than 700 of these bakeries around the world!
The Story of Bakers Delight
Bakers Delight began on May 1, 1980. It was started by a couple named Roger and Lesley Gillespie. Roger was a baker, just like his family before him. They opened their very first bakery in a place called Hawthorn, Victoria, in Australia.
The company grew quickly. In 1995, Bakers Delight opened its first international bakery. This store was in Auckland, New Zealand. Today, there are 19 Bakers Delight bakeries across New Zealand.
In 2003, Bakers Delight expanded into Canada. There, the bakeries are known by a different name: COBS Bread. Now, there are over 140 COBS Bread bakeries in five Canadian provinces. They also have five bakeries in the United States.
In 2017, Roger and Lesley Gillespie decided to step back from running the daily business. Their daughter, Elise Gillespie, and her husband, David Christie, became the new leaders. They are now the joint CEOs of Bakers Delight.
Helping the Community
Bakers Delight is not just about baking delicious treats. It also cares about helping people. Since 2000, the company has worked closely with the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). This group helps Australians affected by breast cancer.
Every May, Bakers Delight runs a special event called the "Pink Bun campaign." For three weeks, they sell pink buns, and some of the money from these sales goes to BCNA. Thanks to this campaign, Bakers Delight has raised over $25 million to support people with breast cancer. It's a great way they give back to the community!
