Baldwin V of Hainaut (born 1150 – died December 17, 1195) was an important ruler in medieval Europe. He was the count of Hainaut from 1171 to 1195. He also became the margrave of Namur as Baldwin I (1189–1195). Later, he ruled as the count of Flanders as Baldwin VIII (1191–1195).

Becoming a Powerful Count

Baldwin V was the son of Baldwin IV, Count of Hainaut. He was known for his striking blue eyes. He inherited the County of Hainaut from his father.

Gaining Namur

Baldwin had a special connection to Namur. His mother, Alice of Namur, was from the ruling family there. In 1182, his uncle, the Count of Namur-Luxembourg, became very ill and blind. Baldwin visited him in Luxembourg. His uncle confirmed that Baldwin would be his heir. This meant Baldwin would take over Namur.

The powerful Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa approved this plan. This happened on May 22, 1184, at a big meeting called the Diet of Pentecost in Mainz. At this event, Baldwin even carried the emperor's sword. This showed his high status.

Ruling Flanders

Baldwin also gained control of Flanders. He did this through his marriage in 1169. He married Margaret I of Flanders, who was the Countess of Flanders. She was a distant cousin who had been widowed. This marriage brought the rich County of Flanders under Baldwin's rule.

Baldwin V was buried at the Saint Waudru monastery. His tomb was placed before the altar of Blessed James the apostle.

Baldwin and Margaret had several children. Many of them became important rulers themselves.
