Baldwin's Early Life and Role in Battles
Baldwin played a part in important events during his time. In 1232, he led a group of soldiers, known as a battaile, at the Battle of Agridi. This was a significant battle where he showed his leadership skills.
Later, in 1246, Baldwin was given a very important job. He became the Seneschal of Cyprus. A seneschal was like a chief manager or a high-ranking officer for the king. This role meant he helped run the kingdom of Cyprus.
However, not all his experiences were easy. In 1250, Baldwin was captured during the Battle of Mansurah. This battle was a major event in history.
Baldwin's Family Life
Baldwin married a woman named Alix. She was the daughter of Walter III of Bethsan and Theodora Comnena Lathoumena. Alix was often called la Seneschalece, which meant "the wife of the Seneschal."
Baldwin and Alix had six children together:
- John, who married Isabelle du Rivet.
- Philip, who later became the Constable of Cyprus. A constable was another important military leader.
- Guy, who married Maria. Her parents were Hetoum I of Armenia and Isabella, Queen of Armenia.
- Balian, who married Marguerite Visconte.
- Hugh, who served as a regent of Cyprus in 1306. A regent is someone who rules a country when the king or queen is too young or unable to rule.
- Melisende, who sadly passed away when she was young.
